It is very easy to remove the console (three screws for me: one in each front cup holder and one in back). Pull the e-brake as far back as possible and I had to put my stick shift in neutral and unsnap the shifter boot. Feed the shifter boot through the hole as you pull it [the center console] up.
Although the bulb version fits the same way as the LED outer unit, I can't say if it's the same for the inner. So what I did was; 1) Removed the centre trim panel at the top of the rearwindscreen. It's just clip studs into the body panel and a couple of plastic ones into the adjacent white panels.

According to my Haynes manual it is held in by a screw in each top corner and then lifts out. You need to disconnect the wiring and cables from the back, taking note of the cable positions. In true tradition refitting is, of course, the reverse of the procedure!
Where the hinge part is underneath, you can unscrew the whole plastic arm rest off its metal support where it slides forward and back, if that makes sense, you should be left with the metal frame when the plastic rest comes away.
